Armed Forces Week 24th – 30th June 2024

This Armed Forces Week 24th June to 30th June, we’re celebrating the important role every member of the Forces plays in protecting our country. We thank them for their service and sacrifice.

This annual, week-long celebration provides an opportunity for the general public to come together as we recognise and support our services, with special emphasis throughout the week on Reservists and Armed Forces.

What is Armed Forces Day?

Armed Forces Day takes place on the last Saturday of June. The celebrations originate from 2006 when Gordon Brown (then-Chancellor of the Exchequer) announced plans for a day to ensure the contribution of veterans was never forgotten. The date was chosen to commemorate the anniversary of the investiture of the Victoria Cross in Hyde Park, London in 1857. In 2009, the name was changed to Armed Forces Day to further raise awareness and appreciation of those in active service.

The week surrounding Armed Forces Day is a chance to show your support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community: from currently serving troops to service families, veterans and cadets. Reserves Day also provides an opportunity for us all to recognise our Reserve Forces.

Celebrations begin on Monday 24th June when the Armed Forces Day flag is raised on buildings and famous landmarks around the country.

Why should you get involved?

Showing support for the Armed Forces provides a much-valued morale boost for the troops and their families. It also gives the public a chance to show their support and appreciation for the Armed Forces, both past and present.

Who does Armed Forces Week celebrate?

The Armed Forces

The UK Armed Forces defend the UK and its interests. They are busy working around the world, delivering aid, tackling drug smugglers, providing security and fighting terrorism.

Veterans

A veteran is anyone who has served in the HM Armed Forces at any time (including National Servicemen, Regulars and Reserves). Armed Forces Day celebrates their continued role within the military community. You can find out more information about the support we provide for veterans by visiting our Get Help page.

Reservists

Reservists give up their spare time to serve in the Reserve Forces, balancing their civilian life with a military career to ensure that should their country require them, they would be ready to serve. An annual Reserves Day celebrates their contribution to the Armed Forces.

Cadets

The Cadet Forces (Sea Cadets, Army Cadets, Air Cadets and the Combined Cadet Force) currently support over 130,000 young people in more than 3,000 locations across the UK. Cadets learn life and career building skills as well as gaining vocational qualifications.

Families

Our Armed Forces couldn’t do their job without the incredible support of their family and friends. We know that families are often impacted by the job their loved one does, protecting our country – so it’s important we recognise the role they play too.

2023 Rockingham International Horse Trials

Amanet are again proud to sponsor the 2023 Rockingham International Horse Trials which will be held from Friday 19th to Sunday 21st May.

Some of the world’s top event riders will be making their way to Northamptonshire to enjoy competing on the superb turf of the Rockingham estate’s ancient parkland. Alongside the international classes, there will be plenty of highlights to look forward to over the three days of competition – such as Arena Eventing, an Intermediate Masters and the prestigious Loomes Championship, which sees a beautiful hand-produced watch made locally in Stamford awarded to the rider closest to the optimum time on the cross country across the Advanced Intermediate and Open Intermediate classes.

The horse trials is a fantastic opportunity for history lovers to explore the Castle’s living past. Clues to the castle’s heritage can be found scattered all around the Great Park, with the cross country courses weaving their way around ancient remains such as the ridge and furrow from a vineyard planted by Henry I in 1100 and the foundations of the old hunting lodge where Henry VII stayed in the 16th century.

The castle estate also affords stunning views of Northamptonshire’s Welland Valley, making it the ideal spot to sit back with family and friends and enjoy watching world-class sport. A picnic is the perfect accompaniment for a day at the horse trials and those seeking a bit of inspiration need look no further than the hugely popular artisan food fayre – packed full of local delights and returning better than ever for 2023.

“It was fabulous to see so many people enjoying a day out at the horse trials last May and we can’t wait to do it all again this year,” said event organiser, Lizzie Saunders Watson. “We are also delighted to welcome back Fairfax & Favor as our title sponsors for another year, a relationship that we greatly value.

“Our whole team at the estate love hosting the horse trials and everyone will once again be going above and beyond to deliver the very best competition that we can for riders and spectators.”

There will be plenty for the whole family to enjoy, including children’s entertainment, a Shire horse display and more than 70 trade stands to be explored. Canine family members are welcome too, with the ‘have-a-go’ dog agility back by popular demand. Run by the locally based Empingham Dog Training Club, there will be plenty of obstacles to try your paw at!
